have you tried putting lubricant in the small hole in shift column about 1/3 up from end? My car would get stuck in a gear and the lub would allow it to free up after working it

And while doing that also try to work a few drops of oil in behind the upper lever as that portion of the linkage gets no lubricant at all. If you can pry the lever and upper washer apart slightly you can probably get a few drops to run down. If it is very tight you might need to temporarily remove the upper clip and slide the washer and any shims upward to directly drop oil at the top of the lever. Moisture condensing on the shift tube can carry water droplets and any dirt down to work its way behind the upper lever and cause corrosion in the space between lever and tube. If the upper lever sticks and tries to turn with the shift tube when the lower lever is selected for first or reverse, the geometry of the 2-3 linkage can move that portion in the transmission first causing the interlock in the trans to affect other shift motions.
