And M541 on p. 160 here (though I suspect this is already what you are referencing):packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/1929_ServiceManual.pdf They mention a puller in an earlier step but not this one, so I would assume it's not necessary, however if you can attach the "hole" end of an adjustable wrench or something to the end of the cam shaft, it would help pull it out. A favorite trick of mine when working on rear axles.
