I was thinking some kind of antenna. The black ends on the rod might be an insulator and mount but that's just a guess.

Since it appears to be deliberately placed in plain view of windshield and appears to have a wire routed around windshield/top post it is something that has to be read from interior of car and most likelymonitored by some passenger navigator rather than read by the driver. Assuming the car is left hand drive and not rite hand drive.

Maybe somekind of temperature monitor/control for windshield fog/frosting/condensation. Difference between inside windshield temp v outside temperature to control defroster. Just a long shot idea.

Odd that the top of the column seeems to at least touch the underside of the protruding roof section (similar to a small visor) over the windshield OR maybe intersects THRU the lower roof????
