Look carefully at the pump casting and you'll see slight recesses in the casting where the copper washers are to go. Don't forget to shellac (or Permatex) the threaded studs that go into the water jacket if you've removed them.

Here is a photo of the water pump as installed on my formerly owned 47 Custom Clipper. I was careful about the length of the bolts and noted those which screwed into the water jacket; hence, the markings. You can see the ones with the copper washers, the bottom ones. Hope this helps.
