1949 Packard Rear Axle Pinion Oil Seal

Hi all,

The rear axle pinion oil seal is leaking.

After researching on this forum there seems to be some question about the quality of the seal available. My first choice was George at Olcar Bearing however he says they do not make them anymore.

Does anyone have a recommendation on who to get this seal from?

Other than the manual recommendation to mark the location of the nut to return the preload to original, is there any other gotchas or tips someone would like to throw my way before I dive into this thing?

THANKS!!!

Bill

Bill; I have several, I will have to look at what I have. If it is the one I am thinking about you can replace the seal in the outer shell if you can get it out with out damaging it. If so I can get you the national number next week. Dell PS this packard is not a custom eight as iI remember.

Thanks Dell,

It is a Super Eight.

George from Olcar said if I can get the seal out without bending up the metal shell he could sell me the rubber...however...I have NEVER gotten a seal out without bending up the metal shell and using the appropriate combination of bad words to do the job...hence my continued search for a seal.

Do you have one that has the metal shell on it?

THANKS AGAIN,

Bill

The national seal number to repair your pinion seal is 471829. As long as you don"t damage the metal outer ring it works fine. a little epoxy will seal it up. Before you take the nut off you must mark nut and yoke with a center punch and tighten to the same spot to maintain the preload on the bearings. Dell PS. If I miss spell some thing its spell checks fault. As I have a spelling defect.

THANKS Dell for the advice. Good call on the marking of the nut and yoke before removal.

I called Kanter and they said they have one that has both the metal shell and the seal. Any feedback on this seal? He said that this is a new design introduced 5 years ago and since then they have not had any complaints.

Bill; The big difference is the price of the seal from Kanter and what you can rebuild yours for. Dell
