Such trick as it is is to flex the sheaths as far as you can in every direction as that is most likely to break up the rust crystals. Soaking the exterior of the sheaths with penetrating oil will at least help those strands move relative to each other. I have had pretty good success with this in the past.

Update - After much articulation and rust penetrant I was able to break loose one of the sides. As I would bend the cable the rust would flake out from the cable covering. The other side would not budge, even after soaking in a variety of liquids, ATF and Acetone, Evaporate-rust etc. During the attempt to brake it loose some of the strands broke. So that paired with the lack of movement pushed me to order a new one.
On the positive side, Evapo-rust worked awesomely on the cable hanger. It removed all the rust after two days in a soak impressive stuff! It is also safe for you and the environment.

I wouldn't recommend to go cheap on brake systems for the cost of a cable(s), even if you got it "free"/working it was obviously quite rusted and subject to break under tension. Also the time savings from cutting and replacing is enormous compared to soak and hope.
If a non-automatic, you need "parking" brakes for a clutched vehicle. Getting if "free" so to disassemble and work on is a different story than I speak to...where all "original" doesn't apply.

Agreed, I started in hoping it was going to a bit easier to loosen up. Fortunately it was easy to source a nice shiny new one.
