I recently bought a fuel pump heat shield from an Ebay vendor who assured me that the shield was removed from a 356" Packard engine. It arrived in todays mail and I ventured into the garage since it is a balmy 28F today and thought I would mount the piece on the engine. There is only one attaching tab that obviously mounts to the front manifold bolt but there is no lower tab. Diagrams in my parts book etc. do not show the shield in sufficient detail to see exactly how it supposed to fit. There is a hole about 1 1/2" diameter with a slot about 1/8 wide about an 1" long on shield at the opposite end to the manifold bolt tab that is odd and I have no idea what the purpose is. I am thinking that this is not the correct shield but if someone could post a photo or very detailed diagram of how the 356 engine shield should look and how it attaches to the engine I would be very appreciative. It does fit somewhat and would serve the purpose so if it isn't correct I will use it until I acquier a correct one. Caveat Emptor.

That sounds a lot like a 51-54 shield which has an "L" bracket that attaches to the rear fuel pump bolt, and then the other leg of the bracket attached via a bolt to the slot in the shield.

Kev, Thanks. I'd better take a picture and post it. There is only one leg and that seems to be to fit the manifold stud.

I believe they all attach pretty much the same way but does sound like you're missing the "L" bracket that extends to fuel pump bolt. The slot may be for being able to loosen the attachment screw and just slide off rather than having to remove it entirely. My engine doesn't have it on right now and shield is in a box not easily accessible to see if the slot is original or perhaps added on yours. The later ones had a large slot to clear the vacuum tube on dual action pumps. Is yours that big? The photo is out of parts man for 22-23 engine

Howard, Well I can now see that an L bracket could be fabricated quite easily to mount the shield to the fuel pump bolt. There is no evidence of a bracket having been welded or riveted other than the one for the manifold so possibly it was bolted on and the slot was used for adjustment? This is a picture of the shield. Note bracket on top and the hole and slot at the opposite end. If not for a 356 then what engine?

As near as I can tell, that looks right. The scallop near the bracket would clear the gas tube and the large notch would clear the vacuum line in 49-50 engines. The little slot is not clear but looks like it might have been done after the fact to loosen and just slide off rather than unscrew from the L bracket. Best thing to do would be to place it on the engine and see if it clears things and if the end of small slot lines up so the L bracket would be straight across to pump bolt. IIRC, bend should allow shield to stop right above the lifter oil supply gallery just above the oil pump.

Looking at yours again and then at Kevs plus the pict in 47 parts book, you may have one for a later 51-4 car or maybe the smaller 48-50 engines. The one shown in 47 manual has the bracket appearing to be closer to edge and without the scallop. They still mount the same way however so will still need the L bracket. Will the one you have clear the intake manifold on the end?

It looks like you have the 1951-54 version. If you look closely at the illustration in the 1941-47 Clipper parts book you will see that the correct shield extends down a lot farther on the back side. The shield for 22nd - 23rd Series Custom 8's should be similar to the one for your car and that one does not have the slot as shown on the one you have as well as Kevins but rather uses 2 holes for the angle bracket that attaches to the rear fuel pump mounting bolt. I could send a picture later if you like.

I cant remember where I saw it. But recently I saw a picture or article that showed the differences in the fuel pump shields. I will have to go look.
