The answer depends on what is in it now. If someone has converted the system to silicone brake fluid, then you must continue with that. If it still has conventional fluid in it, then either DOT 3 or DOT 4 can be used to top it off.

I use DOT 4 or DOT 5 synthetic in all my cars.

Thanks for the quick responses. Not sure if I have a leak or not. Car sat for about three months and needed the master cylinder refilled in order to have substantial pedal. Once I know that answer I will purge what's in there for Dot 4.

If you switch to synthetic the system will last longer and require little regular maintenance but there is a cleaning process that the system have first and all rubber pieces (hoses, cylinders, etc.) should be replaced along with the brake light switch. Otherwise if you don't want to do all that just stick with regular DOT 3 non-synthetic fluid.
