Some of the 1949 Custom Eights have double rocker strips. Was this an option? If not, why???

Rscott, you're confusing 22nd series 1949 cars with 23rd series 1949 cars. Only the 22nd series Custom 8, whether 1948 or 1949, had the double lower body trim. In the 22nd series only the Custom 8 used the egg-crate grill; in the 23rd series, whether 1949 or 1950, it was also used on the Super Deluxe and neither used the double lower body trim.
It is an incomplete description to identify a Packard as a 1949 without additionally adding whether it's a 22nd or 23rd series as both series produced cars to be titled as 1949 models. It can be confusing, might I suggest you but a copy of Bob Neal's book on the 1948-1950 Packards?

Here's how the body-side trim breaks down, all on 127" wb except for lwb models. 1948-'49 22nd Series Custom Eights, double, axle-level strips, eggcrate grilles front and rear, flush rectangular taillights carried over from the 21st Series Clipper. 356 ci engine. 1949-'50 23nd Series Customs and Super Deluxes; single, mid-body strip, eggcrate grilles front and read, oval taillights in chrome housings with side reflectors. Customs: 356 ci engine Super Deluxes: 327 ci engine. 1949-'50 Supers, single, mid-body strip, heavy 3-bar upper grille front, oval taillights in chrome housings with side reflectors. Super: 327 ci engine. Steve PS: Only the Customs had the trunk-lid encircling chrome trim.

Proud 1953 Clipper Deluxe owner. Thinking about my next Packard, want a Clipper Deluxe Eight, manual shift with overdrive. |
