A 7 pound cap will make sure you don't find as many leaks as a 13 pound cap will.

By 54 it was 12psi. If the radiator and hoses are in good condition, the 1 psi difference shouldn't matter much but an old radiator which has had some corrosion (or old hoses) might not be able to stand that much pressure. If it doesn't boil over, 7 would be my choice.

Thanks for the information. I have the radiator at the shop waiting for a report on whether it can be patched up or if it needs a new core.

Good luck and hope it can be fixed. If you go back with the high pressure cap, remember you also have a heater core (or two) that might also be in delicate condition.

Based on that picture, and the reference to the 26xx models, it sounds like '53 was the first year for 12lb caps.

It appears so -- but apparently not across the full line. When the 53 specs published Nov 52, the Clippers still had 7#, the SC item was from Feb 53 stating those chassis in production (all seniors) had it but no mention of Clippers needing or getting it. In 54 it was standard across the line.
