Which engine are you referring to? The 6-cylinder 245 cid and large 8-cylinder 356 cid engines are essentially the same between 1946 and 1950. The single mid-sized 8 282 cid in 1946-47 was replaced by a pair of engines in 1948; the "288" and the "327" which have larger bores than the former 282, larger bore center-to-center dimensions, and thus the blocks are a bit longer. Other less important differences.
Best to let us know which of the 4 engines you're interested in knowning more about.

Sorry about that. I am talking about a '46 8 cyl that I am thinking of using in my '48. I pulled a 288 out of mine and have already sold it.
How easy or difficult is it to place a '46 8 cyl into my '48? Will it fit OK, or will I need to do some modifications? Thanks!!!

One more thing. Will a '50 Ultramatic Trans bolt up to a '46 8 cyl?

A 46 282 is a couple of inches shorter than the later 288s and 327s, so it will go in the hole, but you would have to fuss with the mounts.
The problem will come when you go to install your Ultramatic to it. The bellhousing may very well bolt on, but the nose of the convertor will not pilot into the crank by a long shot. You would have to machine the hole much larger, and I also don't know if the flex plate would bolt up. Too much trouble!
