Near the front of my blog you can see all you need to see of the TL gear box. Even the grease I used and I believe the seal... Which did come from max

Pat, if the history of your TL reduction gear box is unknown, best practice would be to remove it, clean and inspect, and repack with a suitable grease. But if you haven't been paying attention to it to this point, you might first try replacing the plug on the underside with an Alemite fitting and filling the internal space with a suitable grease until it comes out of the vent at the top. If you are willing to leave a grease gun dedicated to that lubricant, just leave the Alemite fitting in place. If after giving it some grease it doesn't quiet down, then consider removing it.

I'd recommend a grease containing molybdenum disulfide.

Is an alemite fitting the same as a zerk?

Mr. Zerk's patent (1929) was assigned to Alemite Corp, hence the eponymous names. There were previous style fittings made by Alemite, so-called cross pin, which required a totally different style grease gun. Usually found on pre-1929 cars and often replaced with the updated type.
EDIT: For those with a pre-1929 car (or just with curiosity) here's an image of the early cross-pin type Alemite grease fitting; some makers, Pierce-Arrow for one, might have used these into the early 1930s. Also pictured is the adapter (still available from MSc) which screws onto the end of your grease gun, the corkscrew attaches the adapter to the fitting. You could also just remove the threaded end of the adapter and add a hydraulic Zerk fitting. As long as we've migrated towards grease fittings, the third item is extremely useful at times, it replaces the normal end of the grease gun and is used to access fittings in very restricted places like a fitting on the interior of a universal joint where the space prohibits using a convertional grease gun head. Just "stick it in the hole" with enough pressure for the tip to dislodge the ball check valve in the fitting. This too is available from MSC - if you do your own grease jobs you should probably have one. Sorry for the picture quality, I just laid these on the scanner.
