Hallo,

Does anybody know why only one of the retaining screws for the bell housing/transmission (55th Series) is self-locking, and the reason for its location?

from my blog.

"was held on by all AP nuts and only one castle headed nut"

Special bolt detailed on pg 48 of SM. May even have a copper washer under head as well. Be careful not to damage bellhousing surface under it as bolt threads into or thru an oil passage and could leak.click here and look at post 444

or just look below at HH56 as he is post number 444 in my blog i linked too.

If this is the screw you refer to, it's because it is drilled into an oil passage and the screw head needs to be flat to provide a seal. If you mean another screw, then need more details as to which one.

Thanks for your answers and advice.
The screw in question is, the one marked A.
I did not see that it did not have a lock-washer (my ageing?)
I suspected it had something to do with oil, as somebody had more or less filled the hole with silicone gasket.
Do you advice using an additional copper washer?

there are 10 bolts on 55. no need for washer on that locking one. SM says 9 washers and lock washers. that self locking is the 10th. i used some locktite blue on mine when installed it, along with the two on the tailshaft.

i had originally put washers under those bolts....as you can tell by Ross telling me to take them off.

i also incourage you to go to my blog. Henry's 55 Constellation.....there is a very detailed rebuild of a 55 TU transmission on there with lots of help from the forum members to boot. so if you are rebuilding yourself....this will help alot with tons of pictures too.

Thanks for your answer and reminder for your blog.

I have said it before, and I say it again, "Packardinfo" is the place.
