56 main bearing bolts

what is better, main bolts with or without lock washers, and washers?, and my bolts have LE on the top.

the parts book shows a longer bolt for 56 and no washers..

My parts book doesn't show that.
55 uses self-locking bolts also - no washers.
Packard apparently standardized on one size for 56, the one they were using for #5 cap in 1955.

Thanks Randy, here are pictures, ones in box came out of my 56 400,

others are from a 56 i think 352 block, look at n0. 1 main cap,,that bar going across the main, other is short,

other pict is my vert super motor mod.

the parts books like you said shows no washers,

Now we can see the '56 main caps in the second photo are physically wider and taller than the '55 in the third, thus requiring the longer bolts.

The bolts with the head recess and six slots are self-lockers - no lock washer required. If you check the SCs, you'll find that self-locking main bearing cap screws were implemented part way into the 22nd Series run. No need for lock plates or lockwashers with those.

The 'LE' on the other set of bolts is probably just the maker's mark - perhaps Lake Erie. They're plain bolts ( probably somebody's idea of a substitute) and require some sort of lock (choose yer posion).

Mind you, I'm no master motor rebuildier, but just commenting from my personal observations over years past.
