This is a Packard Straight 8 engine and Transmission for sale. (288 thunderbolt ultramatic) The engine runs great and the transmission shifts like a dream. I have taken the engine for a little spin before, and I have had zero problems with it.

The Packard barely visible in the photo appears to be a 1952 if the turn signal lens is original but the engine could be from another year or model. To narrow it down, what is the engine number? There were four or so different engines used (288, 327 5-main, 327 9-main and 359 but likely not the latter two unless the manifolds have been changed).

The engine number is on the driver's side of the block and stamped on a raised boss, typically above and a little in front of the started below the edge of the hear. It should begin with a letter although occasionally there may be a couple letters.

Thunderbolt is the head which will fit any of the engines and while it might be a 288, only the engine number can of confirm that.

288 Thunderbolt is the head which fits any of the engines but only the engine number will confirm that’s what it is. Also, the engine number will show exactly which model it was in originally and that might be important to someone wanting the “proper” engine for their car!s

K4 indicates it is a 1952 327 5 main engine with hydraulic lifters and probably made fairly late in 52 production.

To elaborate on the chart that Howard provided, that means that it was from a 1952 250 or a 300 and the tiny bit of grille showing in one of the original photos seems to confirm that.
