It really is in great condition BigKev. I found an explanation for this. Here from the Son of the guy who shot the footage:
"65 Years Ago my Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Kodachrome 16mm film: God Bless Kodachrome, right? I was able to find an outfit (mymovietransfer.com) to do a much superior scan of this footage to what I had previously posted, so I re-did this film and replaced the older version There are more still images from this amazing day, in color, at discoveringhawaii.com"

Very cool video!!!
My mother was there in Honolulu on VJ-Day. My Dad and Uncle were at Pearl Harbor on Ford Island on Dec 7, 1941, but on VJ Day were somewhere in the south Pacific on an island. Craig

portlander, Thank you very much for this video. Several of my wife's family were in Japanese concentration camps and were eternally grateful to the allied forces which defeated the Japanese Empire. Truly they were the Greatest Generation. One thing I really noticed in the street scenes was the absence of obese or even overweight people which certainly wouldn't be the norm on the streets of Honolulu in 2010.

When I was I Honolulu I noticed thousands of Japanese folks and they wern't obese. Makes you wonder who really won. Take a look at the movie they show at the Arizona memorial. Basically in a nutshell "the US embargo on Japan forced them to attack"

Try telling the above to my Dad and Uncle and a couple of hundred million other Americans in 1941. This same thinking goes along with the idea that it was "wrong" to nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tell that to the estimated 1,000,000 American military casualties that might have occurred if Japan were actually invaded in the fall of 1945. Have we had another war where nuclear weapons were used? NO, because "everyone" found out how bad it actually would be. Craig
