There is supposed to be a shield between the manifold and pump but since they can be a pain to work around were frequently removed and never replaced. 51-4 engines used the same shield so a replacement should be fairly easy to find.

Check the bolt hole size in the fuel pump flange. You may find that it is 1/2" ID. That being the case you will need insulating sleeves to properly fit the 5/16" bolts (1/2" OD and 5/16" ID). The length to be determined by the thickness of the flange. Insulating washers under the bolt heads' flat washers and a thick insulating gasket between the pump and engine will complete the insulator kit. The thickness of the insulating gasket is probably about 1/8". This insulator can be made by placing multiple gaskets. This of course in addition to the shield between the pump and exhaust manifold which HH56 talks about, and safety wiring the bolts. No wonder all this stuff got left off the cars when the pumps were replaced. Not friendly to a flat rate mechanics.

Edit: I have some material to make the insulating sleeves. Let me know if you need some and I will get it to you, gratis. Nylon washers should work just fine - Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. You can make up the gaskets using gasket sheet.

I am currently involved in this kind of project, but right now all the stuff is on the work bench.

OK my head is spinning now. This reminds me of my handlebar mount for a 71 BSA motorcycle. When I purchased it it had just a couple of bolts holding them on. When I Saw an exploded view there were about 10'little rubber shims and vareous curved washers that were supposed to be there. So are new pn 9.2035 heat shields available, or do you make your own? I get the idea with the insulator parts around the mounting bolts, and the thick gasket to hold off heating the fuel pump. I will tackle this when I adjust the tappets Should make for a frustrating weekend. Also now I know why there is a L shaped bracket under the rear fuel pump mounting bolt. It must of been for the heat shield. Any help on sourcing parts is welcome.

Max lists them and Kanter probably has them but you might find used from one of the posters here for less. I believe John Ulrich reproduces the 356 and other older engine shields but don't think his offerings are for engines later than 50. Seattle Packards or Packards Southwest have some used engine pieces and sheetmetal so possibly might be worth a contact.
