Well, many thanks for the interesting comments/inputs/pictures .

I had the crankshaft re-checked and confirm that there are no timing marks. I guess I will have to do it the old fashion way with the crank set at TDC and phase the valves do that #8 is at the tail end of the exhaust cycle.

Thanks again

Super8

Figured ill beat the horse to death.

I wandered out to that parts '34 8 parts engine i have yesterday and looked at that crankshaft gear again. Only 1 '0' and again it looks like it was engraved with an electric pencil. I ran into the same years back on another PACKARD '8'.
Tried taking a photo but the '0' is so light NO STAMP that it dose not pick it up. No question that the photo from 32model901 shows 2 stamped '0's. SO WHY !!!!!!!!!!!! 1 vrs 2 ???????????? One thing that comes to mind is in a Service Letter they write about changing the Timing Chain. Maybe this is when they rev. the gear making???????????
MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE
And now we have a '33 gear without markings.

Ill c if i can find that Service Letter with the Chain write up.

Thanks for checking PackardBarry.

That brings an interesting question. If there is one "0" on the crankshaft, it would stand to reason that the single mark lines up between the 2 "0" on the camshaft. When 2 marks are present, they line up to each other. Is it possible that we are dealing with different cam profiles or differences between 8 and and Super8?

FWIW, if you go back to the 1933 valve timing specifications I posted earlier in this thread, the gear markings are the same for the Eight, Super Eight, and Twelve. And though I didn't post it, they are also the same for 1934.

So it would appear that it's not an Eight/Super Eight difference.
