Highlander... Question:
I know that there is a difference in the beltline between the 640 and 645 phaetons. Is there the same difference between the 640 and 645 roadsters? If not, how do you tell the difference between the 640 and 645 roadsters?

The beltline difference is the same on the roadster. Much like you (and I) have said, just looking at it you can see the difference. Also, even though it's "only" 5 inches longer, it's pretty obvious when you see a 645. The engines are the same and most of the other mechancial engineering is as well.

The tough call is the 740 vs 745. I haven't separated in my mind if their coachwork is the same yet. I need to really see a couple of em up close. The beltline detail on the Dietrich 645 is the same as what was used through 34 also, as in the beltline follows all the way down the 1/4 panel. On the 740 Packard bodies (probably 840s also), the beltline wraps around the seat/top of the roadsters leaving a curvy and sexy rumble/trunk area that simply flanks the lid opening. Sorry, I know you asked for the time and I may have built you a watch...(!)

Easy to tell the difference between a 740 and 745. The front fenders are way different. Long and swoopy looking on the 745, while the 740 fenders are similar to 1929 models. The 734 fenders are the same as 745 (in looks, probably not size).

Yeah West, I can see the fender difference. The 745 is very similar to the 8th series fenders. Good description, long and swoopy...I like it. I was refering more to the coachwork. Is a 740 and 745 roadster or phaeton the same body?

I'm fairly certain that the bodies are identical. The difference in wheelbase is made up in front of the cowl, even though they share the same engine. If you're familiar with the 745 engine compartment, you'll know that there is about a 5-inch fan shroud that takes up the extra gap between the engine and the radiator.

Thanks a bunch West. This is actually good news to me. I'm familiar with the big engine compartment/shroud deal. I feel a bit "off" that I didn't consider it. Again, thank you.
