May it be ever so impressive, the previously shown Clipper was a postwar stowaway amidst the pre-war forum.
I hope that the white elephant below helps to make amends. The caption reads:

"Clifton Park Halfmoon Emergency Corp first ambulance, a 1936 Packard which was purchased using funds of the founding members."

It seems to be in need of explanation that a "Halfmoon" car operates under the sign of a cross at the driver's door. Click to enlarge!

When someone would ask to list the ten largest countries on earth, then it is to be feared that Kazakhstan as one of the successor states of the Soviet Union would be forgotten to mention. Wikipedia says:

"...Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country by land area and the ninth largest country in the world...".

At the end of the 1980s I was there by train and when the rails ended in the desert I continued the trip another 500 miles by track vehicle. But there was nothing and meanwhile I believe, it would not have taken much to reach the end of the earth.




But life is changing. Let's listen to Wikipedia again:

"...Kazakhstan has the largest and strongest performing economy in Central Asia. Supported by rising oil output and prices, Kazakhstan's economy grew at an average of 8% per year over the past decade. Kazakhstan was the first former Soviet Republic to repay all of its debt to the International Monetary Fund, 7 years ahead of schedule..."




The macro-economic development is mirrored in growing personal assets. The below shown car and other vehicles of a Packard collection are up for sale in Kazakhstan.

A partitioned formal sedan, or a Berline (sp.?) Limousine? Looks to be in unrestored condition. Central Asia's "Outback"?

John, it may sounds impolite to answer a question with questions, sorry for that. What's the difference between Formal Sedan and Berline Limousine? Even the simple "(sp.?)" gives me a riddle. Special? My dictionary suggests

- serial port,
- social psychology,
- specific gravity,
- strategic purchase and
- suspension polymerization.

Interesting Packard! Looks as if there are a few more available behind it.

The car in question is a 1940 Custom Super Eight 180, Model 1807, 138"wb, Body No. 694, All-Weather Cabriolet by Rollson. Rollson, the custom coachbuilder re-organized from the bankruptcy of Rollston, built semi-custom formal open-front body styles from production sedan bodies on contract. The cast-framed, flat windshield versus the standard stamped-metal V-windshield is the easy identifier.

An 1807, Body No. 1332 Formal Sedan was also catalogued. It was the factory touring sedan body with the quarter window blanked and a formal, padded top covering, a partition window added. Essentially, it is a long-wheelbase club sedan style with formal features.

Strict definition of terms such as 'formal sedan', 'berline', limousine', 'town car', 'cabriolet' weren't observed by the industry, confusingly used interchangeably when the purpose seemed to fit.

Wonder if this '40 might be the one Jim Hollingsworth created?
