More likely just as an aid in manufacturing since there was no reason to seal it up.

While I wait for the machine shop to resurface my manifolds I'm cleaning things up and getting them ready for reassembly. Making extra sure the threads are super clean so those hard to get to nuts are easy to spin on!
When I was cleaning up the washers I realized they are different thicknesses. 2 are 3/16" and 4 are 9/32". I had laid them out in the order they came off, but didn't realize they were different until I started cleaning them. The parts book only says 3/8" washers, but doesn't say anything about the thickness. My inclination would be to put the two 3/16" washers ones on the middle two studs. Maybe I should go get some new 3/16" thick washers, at least for 4 of them as the 9/32" washers are a little deformed, which may be from someone cranking them extra tight to get the gaskets to seal. I don't want to overthink washers, but maybe there is a reason for the different thicknesses that I'm missing. ![]()

Not that it really matters, but you should have the split go away from the manifold. The reason being that you'll have a continuous surface of metal towards the manifold. The manifold expands and contracts more than the head or exhaust so it wants to be able to scoot on the metal.

These should all be the thick washers so apparently someone replaced a couple at some point.
