So maybe this car was the snow car, but never got the salt washed off?

Remember which bar goes where. The bars are marked with a number and rotation.

Ran into the same problem as Henry on the Axel U-bolts. They had seen so much water that they were literally rusted solid, Cherry Red and a 20# sledge would not break them loose. I wound up having to cut them in three pieces to get them off, Thanx to Packardsouthwest for a replacement set now the task of separating all the parts.

I was amazed at the petrified rubber bushings, even more amazed at how the washers were consumed into the bushing and had to be pried out.

Built a wooden Axle stand to start tearing into the rear end. I have aprox 1/4 turn of backlash in the Yoke. Time to determine if it is a shim fix or if we have wear.

Short bars are stripped and painted, Flat Black Epoxy, should be fully cured by next weekend.

Have the pieces and parts soaking in Purple Power, great stuff for cutting the grease, then between Electrolysis and Evaporust, The pieces and parts will be ready for paint.

Henry

Blue and green stripes are for the shorter Clipper torsion bars.

The longer Packard bars had a yellow stripe on the left side and light green on the right.

upon tear down, I found what I feel is excessive backlash in the rear end. If I turn the yoke, I get 1/8 to not quite 1/4 slop before the wheel will engage. Same if I spin the wheels, lots of movement before the yoke will move.

Opening the rear end and removing the Axles, there is zero backlash between the pinion and the ring. this is good, I thought I might need to shim. There is zero wear on the gears, good so far.

I do find with the axles removed, I have slop in the differential gears in terms of them being able to wiggle in the carrier. With the axles back in, I have the same slop/movement, in the differential gears and an audible gear noise when spinning.

Should there be any play in the Diff Gears?

While I am waiting on some forum feedback on the rear end issues, I sand blasted and put the first coat of Epoxy paint on the frame to prevent rust. The paint takes 7 days to cure, so while it is curing, I will rebuild the two rusted outriggers and then shoot the next coat of Epoxy. Hopefully by time this is done, the rear end is ready to go back on as well.

Troy. you can never determine backlash by turning the yoke and waiting for the axle movement. It amplifies thhe gear backlash and the stack up of the side gear play, back lash etc will seem tremendous. I rebuilt alot of rears in my day and got quite proficient at them, The Backlash is checked with a magnetic dial ind tip positioned on a ring gear tooth right at the outer circum holding the pinion stationary and rocking the ring gear. The pinion and carrier side bearings need to be in good shape with no play. Also if your rear is the same as mine on the clipper, there are selective shims for the outer axle bearings. A check of the service man is in order here as the endplay on the axles needs careful attn. I had a slight "click" or snap noise on accel on the Clipper i thought was a shock or trailing arm. I repaired the lrear axle bearing with a replacement NOS I found and the seal and gaskets and set the endplay to spec to stop the leak and make it safe to drive and viola-the click went away. Ring gear backlash is 5-10 thou on new gears and 7-12 is usually acceptable on a good, run in set. Play in the spiders and side gears is normal and replacement may not show much"tightening up" or change in driveability
