Can't believe how mangled that front bearing from that GS bellhousing was. Just to recap, the GS bellhousing and GS oil pan I got as parts. There are not from the GS that is still currently still in the car. That will get dropped and replaced with the Franken-ultra I am building.

Perhaps a front pump failure or something that caused no oil to get to that bearing?? I wonder what that shaft looked like after that!

ross vent hole,

I would of put them in, but I think it can be mod, about dust getting in,

make 2 vent tubes, like the valve train vent tube,

but on the car ,,, think I will make an inspection plate with slots in it, the flywheel will blow heat out, not like the bell housing holes, but heat will get out,


and to really get into it, put air filters,, in pipes,

one of the years they did not have inspection plate,,55?,,

No work on the Tranny since last weekend. But re-lined bands are on the way and a few other parts. So waiting for everything to arrive and that major work will begin.

Plan is the rebuild the trans body, and then get it buttoned up, and then i'll start on the converter. Only so much space in this garage to have things apart without it turning into a tripping hazard.

I forgot to post about this when I was cleaning up the oil pan for the tranny. The GS tranny pan had some serious dents and creases in the bottom of it, as well as a partially crushed in corner. So using a couple different body hammers/picks and a dolly I was able to massage most of the deformation out. Looks pretty decent now. Also, I straightened the gasket flange where you can tell someone used a large screwdriver to try to separate the pan for the tranny when a well-glued gasket was holding everything together.

I'm replacing the shift and throttle shaft seals on the transmission. The old seals were metal clad on both sides. The replacement oneseals are neoprene rubber "cup" seals. Which way does the cup portion face? Towards the tranny or away?

Most seals fit with the cup towards the area fluid is coming from. That way the pressure of fluid can help push the sealing surfaces against the bore and shaft and not push the edge of seal away from the bore.

So here is some of the work that was done today. Ross send me new brake lever pins made from grade 8 non-threaded bolt shafts. Ross's solution uses a few washer to locate the lever on the pin.

Which was good, as the smaller for the two brake lever pins was broken, and gouged the one of the pin holes from taking all the load. Also ,this mangled the roll pin a bit, and make it a bugger to get out.

Also, upon reassemble, I noticed that the inner shift shaft lever had a crack in the out most part of the lever. So a quick msg to Joel, and he has on in stock and will be on the way to me shortly.

This shaft had a lot of end play, I think it was from the previous owner trying to pry off the PB unit. So perhaps this is why the inner shaft developed a crack.

Also, one other thing I found was the shift lever shaft had two seals on it. One was driven over the other. Probably the original one was leaking at some point and someone just drove over another seal to fix it.

you should get with peter fitch, and get the shift lever, and parking pawl made out of metal.
