Lining should be 1/4", not 5/16ths. You're almost certainly going to have to grind it back to get the drum to clear.

On linings, one thing to be careful of is to not get linings that are too hard. For one thing, it wears the drums unnecessarily but for another they do not stop well. I had the linings replaced by a local shop for my 6,200lb 1952 Henney-Packard and they did not seem to stop well but the clincher was when I was going up a steep hill and had to stop - the brakes would not hold the car from rolling backward! It was a scary moment! Even with 14" drums at the rear and 12" drums at the front, the linings had insufficient friction to hold the heavy car.

The self-energizing servo brake action is designed to function most effectively with the car moving forward, you have inherently less brake action in reverse, all other things being equal.

I sometimes wonder if any of the modern linings for drum brakes as effective as the old asbestos-containing linings. And as originally built these brakes were yet further optimized by having linings of different frictional properties for primary and secondary shoes; today we mostly find the same lining on both shoes.

Thanks

This woven lining looks soft. Not sure what will happen once they get heat.
