I've always found the 1938 Twelve fire trucks by General to be particularly interesting (your last picture is one). Here's a contemporary photo of one that was at the Centennial.

The Packard Twelve firetruck no doubt got them to the fire in time. Figure American LaFrance and Seagraves used, respectively, the Auburn 12 and Pierce-Arrow V-12s simply as those companies had folded and they could buy the tooling cheaply.
