I wonder what the knob is below the ashtray? Looks like an overdrive lockout but you can see the automatic quadrant on top of the steering column.

Control knob for the convertible top.

I'm with Randy with the question. I don't think it's the convertible knob because that appears to be left of column in the regular place.

The engine not being original, suppose it could have had it's Ultra removed and an OD installed as so many here have done.

Can't tell if there is a clutch. There is something different with the levers at the end of steering column in the engine compt photo though. Doesn't quite look stick or Ultra. The shift lever looks like it might be in a neutral position if it is stick.

If they did convert, maybe the quadrant and large hole just became something hard to eliminate so came along for the ride.

Sorry guys, I jumped to an erroneous conclusion (again). The convertible top control is to the left of the steering column.

1st, I do not know these cars, but the knob to the right of the column, could that be connected to the cable/wire coming out above the heater box? What is that going to?

The carburetor looks different somehow. There is also the line going up from the front, and the back of the unit, looks like there is something attached. Maybe just shadows?

What is the black button above the ash tray?

Were the horn buttons color coded to the paint, or trim codes?

Good questions. Maybe that is a manual choke that loops back down -- although there does appear to be a heat tube from the manifold for the regular setup.

The black thing looks it might be a covered pushbutton sort of the marine variety with the vinyl weatherproofing cover. Perhaps an auxiliary starter in place of the one that would have been on the carb if that's been changed.

53s had a multitude of horn emblems so IMHO, that maroon one is not the one that came with the car unless the car is now a totally different color. The upholstery has been changed so maybe the paint as well. Don't remember that color of dash in 53s but then they did different things with convertible dashes so maybe.
