Dave, as usual, is probably correct.

The black stuff is probably organics that have had their more electron slutty components removed.

Your metal is more than likely fine. We use the same stuff and have never had a component failure due to our cleaning.

I used the same stuff to clean my fuel pump with any issue. Fuel Pumps are pretty much the same metal construction as the carbs. So if the stuff is meant to soak carb parts in, then it should also be ok for fuel pumps.

I knew someone who soaked a 31 Custom 8 carburetor in one of those cleaners and the only thing left was the wire.

That was a long time ago however.

Ok. Here is a picture of the bowl. It looks like it is a plating or a coating. ...old lacquer perhaps. It does rub off with some firm rubbing with a rag.

I haven't used lacquer thinner yet.

That is a stamped steel bowl. Carb cleaner will not effect it.

Tim, the DL 51 carbs were made from a pretty porous pot metal. Perhaps the varnish was the only thing holding it together?
