That's too bad. I have one in the junk pile that is also broken in a similar fashion.

A couple of theories as to how they break. One is to suspect the solenoid might have shorted causing the motor to keep going. To crack the housing, would suspect lots of damage inside as well. In that scenario would also wonder why the fuse let it go so long before blowing. Another theory is that some kind of road debris or large jolt caused the unsupported weight of the motor to torque or crack it. No proof on either so open to hearing any other ideas.

I would go over the electrical with care just to make sure something hasn't been bypassed or has failed.
