i noticed today a small puddle at the rear of the engine, and after examination it was determined to be engine oil.
im looking at a rear main seal and dropping the oil pan so i was considering the melling- olds oil pump conversion and was going to see if there is any advice on changing this while the engine is in the car thank you as always you guys are the best

if you go full flow you can't,

full flow you need to enlarge the some fittings.

Did you check to make sure that oil wasn't from leaking valve cover gasket(s)?

all, im sure of is it is not valve covers and is not oil sending unit, it seems to be low on the engine in front of tranny.
I drove to a small show about 10 miles from the house yesterday and when I parked there was a trail leading to my car and a puddle about as big around as a coffee cup bottom it sat for about two hours, she was a qt low I added and came home.
looked in driveway this morning and just a damp spot on drive way yesterday i backed in to parking spot, at home just drove in and parked.
im going to try the 10 mile drive and park today

if its not the rear seal,

then its the front,

if you have an org, timing chain cover, the seal may have worked loose.

the fix for that is remove timing cover, new rope seal, then add no. 6 or 8 bolts, to hold seal in,

Can you replace the rear main seal with the transmission in?

Yes, you can replace it with the transmission in place.

my 55 v8 has been leaking from the very rear of the pan where the back cork seal goes in. i'm pretty sure i just need to retighten my bolts. so check the pan bolts maybe?

i originally thought mine was the rear main as well, but following the oil trail it is the back of the pan.

Often, if a pan has been on and off frequently and probably overtightened a few times, the pan lip begins to deform as the bolt openings deform and raise above the surface. When this happens it's pretty much impossible to stop pan leaks unless you remove the pan and, using a flat surface and a hammer, reshape the pan lip back to a flat surface. Ditto for Ultramatic pans.

probably why the front of my TU pan I still leaking despite trying to rtv the bolts 2 times now. it has slowed, but still drips...blugh.
