Can anybody tell me what type of valve this is?.
As far I can tell it's not servicable seal-wise.

Not 51-6 but with that long pressure tube, very possibly 22nd series. I believe the very first valves Packard used were different & not sure if they were Ranco. One of the repair sites used to have a photo of one but site has changed and most of the photos are gone.

A lot of cars used very similar designs so it could have even even been off another make. Is the operating box just sitting on the mounting plate or is that the actual orientation when in use.

Rocky, I'm curious why you say it's not a Ranco - what's the evidence for that? It sure looks a lot like a Mopar/Ranco to me.

I have just done some forensic work (used some steel wool and magnifying glass), and found a name stamped in the body that must be Everhot. The seal is made of rubber and fibers, and as far as I can see, impossible to replace.

Hmmm...., could be. Everhot was (and still is) a significant maker of hot water heaters and related parts, flow control valves, plumbing hardware, etc.

The control box is sitting on the mounting plate, I have bent it loose to be able get to the seal.

Being unattached makes sense in the photo now. I don't know which other valves Packard used except for Ranco but there was a service bulletin on the early valves with long tubes. That's what made me think it might be early 22nd series. I don't know if the same valve carried thru 23rd series because there are a couple of valves listed as 22-23 on ebay and no sign of any long tubes.

It's very possible that the valve is not the original one, as my Clipper was more or less totally restored in the US in the nineties.

Just for the record, the valve in question is stamped Everhot.
