Almost forgot the reason I logged on tonight.

Got the hood off today and its laying on my bench.

Before I do something stupid is there an easy way to remove those little clips that are holding the letters onto the hood. The image below shows what I am talking about but I am sure you already know.

I stand corrected on the rusty tools. Sounds like a salvageable use of one after all.

Without a better shot I can't be sure on the switch either but what I can see of the bezel sure looks like 51-4. Packard switches had some function labels on the end of one switch which will say CYL, BAT, and MOT. Other mfgs may have also used the same style bezel.

If labeled and intact, the middle BAT set and the MOT set of side terminals will be connected by a buss bar. If labeled as mentioned, the switch is for the hydraulic windows. The internal configuration makes it unsuitable for individual electric motor windows since the CYL terminal is active when the window goes up or down.

At any rate, I'd hang on to it for posterity if nothing else.

EDIT: On the hood letters, GENTLY use a sharp pointed scribe type tool or small jewelers screwdriver and pry the small tangs pressing against the pin away. Once they have loosened their grip, the speednuts can generally be rotated slightly and pulled off. Try not to bend the tangs too much and they can be reconfigured and reused. If a tang does break, new speednuts are available. Whatever you do, don't pry or put a lot of pressure on the speednut and pin while the tangs are still firmly attached or digging in. The pins can break quite easily.

Good counsel by Howard. You have the advantage as the hood is off and the studs on those letters are stout, as compared to other items of script on your car.

I used a very small set of dykes and clipped the speednut along the short side. Having a small dowel or small block of wood can sometimes be used to press the studs out once you weakened the speednut. Basically, less is more, and take your time.

I thought of your project today as I was using to small tools cleaning some rifles. Pictured are the "micro" dykes I bought many moons ago over at Sears. They are marked Craftsman. I think I picked up the 'dentist' tools at a gun show years ago too. These can be helpful as you tackle getting those letters off the hood. I hope your project is progressing well.

Hobby shops that sell supplies for bead and jewelery making also have some interesting small tools for working wire and handling small parts. Generally, they are of high quality.

Thanks for the advice. I picked up the tools below and they worked great. Had everything off in about 10 minutes and did not break a single piece.

Also below are a couple shots of my Parts Storage System. I hope it works. Its mostly for the nuts, bolts and over small items.

Lastly for tonight, its funny that you tell me to be careful Kevin. Those last two images are of my Cochlear Implants hanging onto the car. I am a bi-lateral cochlear implant recipient. In other words, I'm deaf but these fantastic devices allow me hear again. My real point is that these very expensive devices that I wear contain magnets. Therefore they stick to damn near everything. Every time I sit, stand, lie anywhere near this car they pop off my head. I guess I don't have to hear to work on the car but it's annoying to say the lease.

Someday, when I can find a good way to do so I'll work my kidney transplant into a post but until then I am thinking of changing my signature block to read "The worlds only stuttering, deaf, left handed, kidney transplant-te that owns a Packard". Its catchy!

Went to Harbor Freight and picked up a set of larger sockets and a breaker bar last weekend. First thing I did when I got home was get out the 1" socket and try to turn over the engine. I've have no idea what shape this engine is in but I have confirmed that the engine is not seized. Its amazing the amount of relief I felt.

Also got the front bumper removed. It only took me about 3 evenings. Separating the upper and lower bumper is going to be even harder as those bolts have deteriorated beyond being able to put a wrench or socket on them.

Lastly, I spent my last government mandated furlough day (today) pulling the carburetor, ignition coil and a few other items off. I am planning to pull the engine in about a month.

Please photograph that ground strap. I cannot recall ever seeing a strap secured in such a manner.

Also, did you unravel the wiring harness? If not, I would make a note and BOLO for somekind of fix or workaround by the previous owner.

Looks like you are having fun however. Enjoy it!

I have not seen a ground strap attached like that either.

Here are a couple close-ups of the grounding strap. I had not given it much thought. Just assumed it belonged there.

The last image is the heater core I removed yesterday. Behind it I found that piece of wiring harness. I also found a number of taped splices in all the wires nearby so it think they replaced the wires on the side of the engine compartment.
The other side of the engine (around the battery) looks ok so what ever problem a previous owner had it was only on that one side.
