And it is a 327 with 9 mains! Hope she runs well. Prev owner mounted a remote resivior (looks like from a vw bug) to the power brake unit. Resivoir is where the voltage regulator used to be.

As said by Gregor, we are going to try and get a trans in his car this weekend. I have been trying to read up on the ultramatic, but perhaps somebody can provide a link or advice. The trans he got is a used, but supposedly functional trans. Before we install I plan to check the adjustment on the low and reverse bands, and be careful to adjust the linkage for the shifter and throttle valve linkage.
Any other reasonably easy things to check before we go through the trouble to install this really heavy transmission? The little bit of fluid that I saw that came out of the trans looked ok and not burnt. Also, the engine that was attached to it had a spun rod bearing. I hope the car was parked because of the engine and not the trans. It is an non-gear start trans from I think 1951.

It would be a good time to drop the pan and clean it and the pickup screen. Also replace the front and rear seals. You could do a lot more but that's where I would start.

It is so easy to seal those things up on the ground, and so very hard to do it in the car. To what Joel said I would also add the selector and throttle shaft seals, a nice new pan gasket, and new o-rings on the band adjusting screws.

If the trans is from a 51 and has the drain plugs on the face of the convertor you will need to drill clearance holes in the flex plate to accommodate.

See if you can borrow some sort of real transmission jack to help you. You will need to jack the car up rather high to get the trans under, and then the trans has to be tilted far forward so that you can get the tailshaft up inside the X-member of the frame and slid rearward before bringing the front up level.

Thanks guys. I'll try and convince gregor to get these parts and 'do it right'
Questions, The front seal just pulls out, but the rear we have to take off that monster nut and re-tighten to 200-225 ft lbs. Do we need to count threads like on a pinion seal?
We have the flex plate that came with the trans, so we should be able to use that and not have to drill anything.
-good things take time-
