Both Bendix and a Monroe PS systems were used in 55/56 so that is why there could be a difference between the one you have and the one that Howard has in his pictures.

i was just wondering how packard managed to fit the hose in there, when it wouldnt even allow the wheels to turn all the way without hiting the arm. did the hoses contact the arm stock??

Best I can do. There is nothing touching. On my car, the main hoses droop a bit more toward ground exiting the valve, than these show, but free range of motion.

I just noticed that you appear to have Bendix steering, and that your pitman arm is straight. On my Monroe system, the pitman arm has an "S" bend in it. Am I nuts or or right?

Was just looking at parts book again, and if you have the Monroe, there is extra spacers on the bracket that holds the hoses. That provides an offset. Which steering unit do you have?

Eric, you're correct. There are 3 pitman arms listed, one for 55-6 which must be for standard, then one for Monroe and another for Bendix.

The easiest way to tell is if you have just two long hoses, or two long and two short hoses. If you have 4 hoses, you have the Bendix version. FWIW, both my '56 Patricians and Craig's '56 400 were Monroe systems, for that matter, ALL '56 Packards I've seen have been Monroe systems.
