Wesley & JW, Thanks for photos. I bought a repro set like JW's mirror above that goes on the molding. Since it is a one chance thing, am not yet committed to placing it where the 23rd series template shows -- Thought there might be a 21st series template floating around that showed something different or even a second location like the 55-6 mirror choices.
Kind of hard to see at the angle of photo but JWs installation would seem to have his placed like that 23rd template -- at the corner of vent as are the others. Just concerned with being that far forward if it works well. Not hearing any negatives yet so must assume it does. Wesley, is your mirror a 23rd series mounted differently than the template shows or aftermarket? I had planned to use a "remote control" mirror I found on ebay that looks a lot like yours. It mounts on the door similarly to the way yours was done but needed a large hole for the operating cable. In the end decided to do the correct 21st Packard repro instead.

Howard, I have seen mirrors like the one that was mine on other Custom Clippers, so I believe it to be correct. I took two #10 (I think that was the size) flat washers and ground off two flat sides on each so they would fit into the groove of the trim molding and be flush with the raised part. This made a more secure fitting as there was better mirror bracket contact with the molding. The mirror bracket fastened on with sheet metal screws, at least that is the way mine was mounted. It gave a good view to the rear and did not interfere with the vent window. I would think that one on the passenger side would be for appearance only and not give much of a view due to size and location.

Howard,
The old man that had the Maroon Packard before me said that that was the correct mirror for that car, so that is all I can go by. Wes

I didn't see them but the base on those and the ones on your car look to me like they might be 23rd series. I bought a pair with the base having the two exposed screws as is shown on post 2 above. The vendor says those are the type that were on 41-48 cars.

I guess it just goes to show, no real set standard for mirror placement. Found this on Michael V Struebing FaceBook page just like my 47 Maroon Packard. The funny thing was that on that same car the passengers side mirror is mounted in the trim.
