Dan (MIDan), thanks for sharing. Howard (HH56) is too polite to mention that the picture is showing a GAZ-13 Chaika. Not in a know-it-all manner but to assist you, please find below a ZIS (with artistic radiator grille) on rails. Can't see the back of black GAZ 13 Chaika. But my guess is that it has a trailor hitch at the rear for pulling a small train flat car. Load a regular car onto the flat car, tow it with the Gaz 13.
PRobably made for people that don't like to fly or float. That way, one could travel to the far eastern parts of Russia by rail and then just unload their regular car for local transport. Several weeks ago i did a Google Earth trying to look at the very eastern 1/3 of russia near Alaska. Spent a few hours looking at that area. But there does not appear to be any roadss or towns or railroads over there in eastern Russia??? Or there ARE plenty of roads and towns etc in eastern Russia??? Anyway, my guess is that the conversions for rail travel is for very long distances across the country.

Look at the very front of the rail wheels. Directly in front of the wheel there appears to be about a 2" diameter rod about 10" tall and is ressting verticlee directly on top of the rail. That same rod appears in a previous pic. Anyone know wwhat that is for??? Carbon electrical pick up of somekind???? Which would indicate that the car is electric powered rather than gas or diesel powered.

Oh!!! They are probably sand despensers. THat car was made for traveling into eastern Russia.

I thought that too but it has teeny rubber buffers at the rear, plugged into the exhaust openings. What looks like solid steel buffers at the front is nothing else than the license plate holder.
