The answer to "patina"

Just saw an ad for a new local service.fresno.craigslist.org/aos/4825339534.html
Apparently there is a process where you can have a car recolored with a plasti-dip like compound -- either the entire car or just parts -- for considerably less than the cost of a paint job. Ad says "Get tired of the color and you peel it off or change it." Also says it "Can be applied over original paint without harm". I know they have the vinyl overlays that cover entire cars but has anyone seen one of these treatments. Sounds a bit far fetched to me that it would hold up or look that good but what do I know. If it works, sounds like something promising and relatively inexpensive for the short term for those who don't want paint bare cars or all the work like Hank put in to get to a well patina'd car.

In the images of cars I've seen with Plasti-Dip the finish has a distinct matte appearance. And why do they call it "dipped" when it is sprayed on? IMHO not right for a Packard, but might be OK for a rat rod.

That sounds like Dip-Your-Car, and anyone can do it in their garage a lot cheaper than sending it to a pro or service. Here is the link: DipYourCar. It's a good tough coating that is, in fact, Plasti-Dip, but sold in quarts and gallons with additional plasticizers, colors, and paint effects like pearl and metallic flakes. The finish can be matte, or high gloss depending on the final applied coat. Most of today's modders prefer the matte paint finish as it make them "feel" the car is stealthier.
My personal style would be to not consider using it on a classic vehicle as it's contradictory to the nature of the vehicle. This coating is used by modders of mostly turbo pocket rockets. I myself use it on my chrome wheels to keep them free of corrosion. When the clear coating starts to get nicked or ratty looking, I peel it off and recoat with a HVLP gun. Some like to use it on door and trunk handles and vehicle emblems, while others like to cover part or all the vehicles paint and/or trim. It has its use and purposes according to ones personal tastes and preferences. Warm regards!
