The floor. Column shifts were a big problem for almost all the car companies for the first few years after there introduction.

Cane (floor) shifters were far more positive and precise in their action as they had no linkage to wear and get sloppy, the "foot" of the cane directly engaged the shifter rails.

Floor shifters also had the advantage when riding with your girl snuggled up beside you and your hand slipped going into third

My late father swore by "cane" shifters for the very reasons you mentioned; although neither he nor my grandfather owned a Packard. I'm sure that "cane" shifters in general were better, regardless of vehicle make/model.

Of course there is something to be said for the column shifter,my 57 clipper has a "three on the tree"and it's been reliable and smooth.Not to mention room for "one more :)

The same could be said for 60's era muscle car 4-speeds (shifting into 4th in that case), except that the girl had to be sitting on the console rather than in the shotgun seat.
