What color were the marine engines?
Early Packard marine engines like the IM-268 and IM-357 were green, same as the automotive engines of the same ara. Early 50s era Packard IM 356 and 245 as well as the non-magnetic marine diesels were gray, same as the automotive engines of the same era. Packard didn't make a V8 marine engine so I'd guess the individual converters picked their own colors. Of the several Stokes conversions I've seen, 1 was blue and all the others were red. There are some good displays of Packard marine engines based on their automotive engines at the Warren museum, the Packard Proving Grounds, and the Dayton museum. Most (all?) of these were restored and donated by Mr. Ole B??k of New Jersey.

The converted marine V8 that we have is red. Ours has no serial # but is a 1956 352CI Clipper Series.

OD, J,
Any idea what the Utica number is on the V8 marine engines? Is there a letter before the number? What is the cast date on the bell housing? Were these engines replacement, or out of cars? I would be surprised if there is not some sort of identifying number on the engine blocks. From a manufacturing, sales and inventory perspective at least.

From the Stokes marine conversions I've seen they were based on new "stock" 5660 engines from unsold inventory. They have the corresponding Utica # B-XXXX number as they would have had for the car model they were intended for, and no motor number. Whether they were purchased directly from Packard or from J. C. Whitney I don't know though th ad below suggests they were bought from S-P directly. Whitney was selling brand new "in the crate" surplus Packard V8 engines for quite a few years, as I recall they were about $300 or so.

You'll note the above engines have plain rocker covers. Most of the surplus engines I've seen which came through JC Whitney, Standard Surplus or Stokes Marine were those destined for Studebaker Golden Hawks, red with plain unembossed silver rocker covers. The were same spec as the '56 Clipper, 352", 275hp, Carter carb, Autolite distributor, but with the Studebaker oil pump without the vacuum pump.

Jack Vines:
What would u determine my blue block to be. See previous posts of this thread #7,8 and 9. It has an SP 21161 number stamped by the oil filler tube and a |6| or maybe it's a |9| at the upper rear right corner of the block. See the pics in above posts.

The one on our warehouse has no numbers stamped into the front pad. But as you requested here is a picture of the casting numbers on the back of the bell housing. <a href="http://s671.photobucket.com/user/JamesRFrom/media/Packard%20400/NCM_0603.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv72/JamesRFrom/Packard%20400/NCM_0603.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_0603.jpg"/></a> Thanks James
