You can purchase (from MSC, for example) sintered bronze rod, the type of material Chrysler patented back in the 20s or 30s as "Oilite"; being sintered it's porous to a degree and can be saturated with a lubricant and makes superb bushings for generators, starters, small motors, etc. The only trick is that lathe-turning it tends to close the pores so after turning you might want to hone as a final sizing step.

As was discussed previously, I have no idea how many NOS or used motors are available. I do know they are expensive. I started playing around with a possibility for a modern window motor replacement. Here is one idea I threw together with what I had on hand. Don't have any way to test it but it looks good in concept and don't think it would cost too much to make.

This motor is aftermarket cheap I bought just to do a mockup. Other than a car which needed a 6 pinion gear, don't remember what it was for. The real motor chosen should probably be a readily available Dorman or maybe a stock GM offering. This mockup pinion adapter was made out of nylon and attached to a casting of the Packard pinion and would need to be verified with a different motor. Once a motor was decided on a pattern for a real one can be made and then could be cast in bronze or steel -- maybe even zinc. I could do a zinc casting here but not sure it would be strong enough. Minor machining of the casting for the new motor pinion and some setscrews would finish it.

Without both regulators, can't say for certain but I think one adapter plate could be made and just turned over so a single plate could be used for either side. The pinion adapter just slides over the new motor pinion and would be attached by several setscrews before the motor is placed in the regulator. A couple of relays would be needed to accommodate the Packard switch to the modern motors in a similar fashion as to what Craig did with his street rod setup. Being permanent magnet motors, they would also be polarity sensitive so connections would be reversed for 55 and 56

If anyone thinks it has merit and wants to make or improve on it, be my guest.

Nice solution Howard, but which would be less trouble: yours or my "street rod" solution? Both apparently require a double relay to handle the polarity switch. Hmmm...

Its a tossup as to which would be more work.

I could be wrong but don't think there are many reversible motors made today that have the dual or reverse wound field coils and would just drop in electrically. Some of the multispeed blower motors have real field coils and are reversed by externally changing coils but on window motors It seems that just about everything has gone to permanent magnet motors. On those you reverse polarity to reverse direction so will need relays to do the job. Some of the GM multi lead window motors of the 70's or 80s might work but those need special switches to do the reversing and are also somewhat pricy compared to the Dorman or other aftermarket brands.

One thing about this particular motor change is there would be no mods needed to the car so some might be more willing to try as compared to changing the regulator out. If an inexpensive Packard motor came along then it would be a matter of removing a few screws and lifting the new motor package out of the regulator and putting the original style in its place. It doesn't solve the original problem of the motors being stressed by the Packard geometry and that is a concern. Maybe the modern motors have more support so wouldn't be as prone to breaking a shaft but whether they would burn out as easily is anyones guess.

there is a place here that would cast it, he is a Packard owner too,

I sorta see a problem with the set screws, slipping, better to drill into shaft, I do it with my train gears, so you know its not going to slip on shaft,,

both are great ideas,, plate not a problem for me to make, do a stack at a time,

a cnc would spit them out in no time,

edited,,,,looking at that pinion again, I might be able to machine that,

edited again, I would need to find an end mill with that taper,

don't have tool grinder

Riki, the pin is a good idea and something to consider. The original thought was at least 3 or 4 setscrews of the self locking type around the circumference of the adapter that would fit between the pinion teeth. The way it goes together there is no chance of it slipping away from the motor -- just slipping on the pinion.

Was thinking if there was any interest in the idea the pinion, plate and relays could be made as a kit. It could be done something along the lines Craig and Jack did with the Olds oil pump. Buy just the kit and separately buy a specific pump -- or motor in this case -- or buy a complete ready to bolt in assy. The pin might be an issue for some to drill if they opt for just a kit.

The whole idea depends on if there is an interest or even a need. It would really depend on the supply of original motors and if the modern setup could be done for less than the $2-300 exchange price original used motors seem to be going for. Even if the price is comparable some will never install a non stock part but since it is hidden others might if it is a working substitute and the price could be a bit more friendly. Am thinking a Dorman motor would be about $40-50 on Amazon -- a bit more at NAPA --, a pair of relays and sockets seem to be around $10 on ebay plus another bit for terminals and hardware but no idea on the adapter and plate.

What it boils down to is if there is feedback from any who think there is a need. If so then it will take more development and testing. I can continue to refine the design a bit but have no way to test short of tearing my car apart. Really don't want to do that so If you or anyone else wants to take on the project I will help any way I can.

It would need to be a power window door. The regulators are different power vs manual.

There is an "orphan" car meet this weekend (March 11-13) in Henderson Nevada at the Railroad Pass Hotel Casino. They are having a tour of "Rick's Restorations" in Las Vegas (The One on TV), and I will bring the power window motor to him to see what they think about it and what can be done with it.

Oh, Packard's welcome!
