took the radiator to the shop today. it is junk. I trust these people, they have been family owned and in the same place since 1948.
there are several patches in the top tank and he says the core isn't done right, whatever that means. the bottom tank is good though. he honestly said he would just be taking my money if he worked on it. working on options for a replacement. found a place that does custom aluminum radiators based off of your drawings or off an original. so that has me thinking. Flack...will fill you in on this. took out the shutter thermostat too just too look at it. didn't realize the thermostat was sealed. looks like the whole thing has to be replaced, not just the insides. red arrows are the patches. what is that thing on top of the radiator...the bubble...on the inside it has holes. looks like some kinda of air catcher or something...idk...thoughts? Is the place you found to make the aluminum radiator the same one Craig mentioned in his Panther blog a couple of weeks ago? I don't remember the year or model but in their offerings they had already built a Packard radiator from the 30s so the CNC plans are made and available for more.

Here is the place Craig found and their current Packard offerings. Maybe you could compare prices with the place you found and let us know.cgj.com/search-results?sv=packard

Well that solves that problem! Lol. Looks like I need a 36 radiator though because the 37 doesn't look like mine at all. Missing the bolt mount at the top and bottom on the one he has listed for 37. My car was sold 12/24/36. So it may have some leftover 36 parts.
Flack.... looks like I'm going aluminum cause it's the same price as a recore... no brainer. For some reason I was thinking you meant finding an aluminum version from another car that would fit. But I'm cool with an exact replica in aluminum like the one in the link below. If you look at my radiator pics you will see that my mounting brackets match this one listed for 36.cgj.com/store/product/pk-7003/. I'll have to post some better pics of mine to compare to the 36 offering in aluminum. And lll have to call them too to make sure before I order. As far as the shutter thermostat... I don't care... this is TEXAS and I'll just rig them up to stay open.

here is what the brackets look like on my "37" tank in a car made before 12/24/36.
and compared to the aluminum 36 they have listed. I also wonder if his are gravity or pressurized systems. I do see the bleed hose connection on the cap mount...so I'm not sure. also my radiator core measures 24" tall by 17" wide....which better matches the 36 tank on the website. looks like the only problem would be finding radiator hoses to fit as the inlet and outlet on the stock radiator are different from the generic ones on the aluminum version. one could use those bendable metal aftermarket ones...but those are bit too hotrod for me.

One other big difference appears to be the lack of a hole for your shutter thermostat.

well yes, but thankfully I don't care about that. the radiator shop that I went to yesterday said that if I can find a good used radiator that didn't have the sylphon in it...they could cut it off my old one and weld it to the new one.
with the new one being aluminum...and sylphon being brass...I doubt it would work and it would void the 1 year warranty on the aluminum radiator too. but I can rig up something to move the shutters manually. so in the winter I could close them myself and the summer open them myself before driving. no biggie. being this is Texas...open would suffice 90% of the time. this place also does fan, so I might beable to get the to do a custom fan shroud/mount on the front for twin SPAL fans.

here is another company in what looks to be original brass and can mount fans as well. looks like the fan mounts have PACKARD script on them. kinda cool. no prices listed though, but looking over their website I know remember looking at them before and they are not cheap.
