I looked back in my pictures and blog to see what I'd found on my springs. I remember a gasket ring on the top of the springs, but I don't remember the material. I didn't have to replace them though, so something fairly sturdy.

It's a rubber ring so may have hardened and become brittle with age.

my grandfather replaced the springs, video evidence, went and checked...bottom was very hard rubber....age I'm sure. but it was rubber.

Thanks everyone. Most of the other rubber on the car was bad so will plan on replacing them.
