It has been a while so I wanted to update the progress on the Caribbean. With the gas tank replaced and the BTU rebuild the car roared to life but a noise could be heard coming from within the engine compartment. The car drove well but the noise stayed constant sounding like a knock from the engine that increased with rpm.
The decision was made that the car be sent over to our restoration shop for further investigation/evaluation. Once there and on the lift it was determined that noise was coming from the rear of the engine close to the transmission. Prior to dropping the pan to check the bearings or pulling the engine to check the flex plate it was decide that we check the overall condition of the engine. A compression test was done and all cylinders were good except for one that was only putting out 50psi. A leak down test was preformed on that cylinder to determine the source of the problem and it was found that compression was being lost pass the rings into the crank case. So now we had two problems low compression and a mystery knock. While preparing to pull the engine our tech notice a faint knock from the torque converter while turn the crank to access the torque converter bolts. With engine removed the flex plate was inspected and found to be good. The oil pan was removed as well as the cylinder head on the side that had low compression. The bearings check out good on all the rods and mains while the mystery of the low compression was solved with the rings being stuck from sitting. The engine was treated to hone of each cylinder, a fresh set of rings and new lifters. But the knocking was a mystery still. Next item to eliminate would be the torque converter. Upon disassembly we found that the converter clutch piston was installed incorrectly at some point and was bolted against the high spot of the converter clutch housing causing the ears to fracture and break overtime.
While the engine was out the engine compartment was cleaned and the firewall repainted. The converter and engine are now back in and we hope to have it running again before the end of the day.

Example of where the converter clutch piston was hitting.
