The shop that removed the engine from my 47 2126 is starting to reassemble the pieces and parts. It's going well and hope to have a start up in the next few days. Thanks everyone and Howard for the picture on the heat shield. Should be here tomorrow. While installing fan etc, they noticed that there were no discernible timing marks on the harmonic balancer. Would TDC on #1 cylinder be a good starting point for a center mark? Any suggestions.

I'd give the damper a closer look; the original stampings were sometimes quite faint and also could be filled with thick paint.

The shop owner keeps a magnifying glass in his hip pocket. Found a hairline crack on the carburetor that three other shops missed. Could be filled with paint. Short of media blasting back to bare metal, is there any way to key that center line. The factory must have used some metric to mark it originally.

Perhaps if the PPG has the original blueprint for the damper it will show how the marks were indexed. Otherwise, just time the ignition "by ear", to many it is the preferred method anyway.

On a 22nd Series Custom 8 which should be the same, TDC on #1 is approximately in line with the keyway in the pulley.

That's where they're starting; glad to have that confirmation. Pretty confident it will be close. Will take Owen's advice above and play it by ear on the final adjustment to timing. Thanks again all...

A few miscues along the way however, the engine is awaiting a very sluggish starter to be overhauled. Should be Thursday with hopes to light this candle sometime Friday AM.
Question has come up though regarding a somewhat "tentative" spark plug thread on #8. The tech stopped up a bit short after sensing it was about to strip the threads. Was afraid to go much further though he did say the other 7 seemed fine. Suggestions?....red locktite....?
What's more likely bad plug threads or head threads. Seems the plug would be less likely to have bogus threads. It hasn't been a problem in the numerous times the plugs have been in and out over the past three years.

Cylinder head thread repair kits for spark plug threads are commonly available and it's a routine job. Forget the LockTite, repair it correctly.
