Yes, I believe you had go over to the gauge to check the fuel. But I'm not 100% sure. I was kind of hoping someone new something about this, I found the patent on a Google search showing this same exact gauge.

This is the "Triumph" fuel gauge as originally fitted to my 1922 Packard. Its mounted on the tank behind the spare wheels and is virtually impossible to see.
Internally it has an arm with a float at one end and small bevel gears to drive the needle at the other end.
