mine didn't have that long shaft part on the end. it has two screw on pieces with the needle sticking out of the middle on each end. but i suppose that shaft piece could still be in the transmission on mine. also mine is a flexable metal line, kinda like electrical conduit.
later, Hank

Not the right one for your 56.
Are you missing the entire housing & cable or is the cable just broken? If broken, you should be able to go to a good parts store and get a universal speedo cable repair/replace kit, cut it to length and attach the end. Ones I have used in past have a square end already formed, and a cap with the flanged square end that goes over the cut to length cable. Here is one example of a repair cable but there are others. The one you need is approx 3/32 square at ends with a thin flage. jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Pro ... 25/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2008925/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=universal+speedometer+cable

HR56 What if you are missing the entire cable for a 55 Patrician? Any suggestions for online stores? Thanks

To get the entire assy new, Max Merritt has them:maxmerrittauto.com/
1955-1956 SPEEDOMETER CABLE & SHAFT ASSEMBLY MODELS WITH ULTRA 6421081 10.127 95.00 0.00 EACH Details As his photo says, typical. The one you want has the ring with internal threads and shaft sticking out on speedo end but trans end has a similar size but threads are external that screw into a recess in adapter. Or you could try Mike Dulinski or maybe PAC_MAN DON for a used one. Attach file: (14.88 KB)

HH56 Thanks, I knew the speedometer did not work and was relieved when I reached behind the dash it did not have a cable, the gauge appears to be OK. The dash is so nice I did not want to mess with it. It is a good way to keep the mileage down however.

Is it actually missing or perhaps disconnected and pushed aside for some reason as mikec's police car was. It should exit the firewall at one of the grommets near L hood hinge. Look for a metallic cable coming though.

on mine, i guess they must have found it broken, and just never reconnected it.
By the way, are the 55s the same as the 56s?

I believe the inner cable same for all 55-6 & the housings same between like transmissions. There is a difference in housings at trans end between Ultra and standard trans.
