Riki, I don't recall the details but I did mine as described, in service some 15 or so years since and no leaks.

The rubber. Need to drill 1/2 inch hole.. Still snug fit on shaft..and you need to tighten with outside washer turned backwards..till you get threads for nut

Ugh..
After trans install.. Shift motor went to park.. Went to take out of park..to tighten drive shaft nuts. Pushed P...didn't go into park. After going thru tests..didn't have power with l.h.d. Went under touched motor went into R. So dropped pan..for some reason shift motor needed to be pulled out..so bent strap..everything works now..thinking about replacing motor strap with 1/16 or 1/8 inch flat hot roll. Something must get grounded..but you can get cover off without moving trans over..I was thinking of putting insulation on on plate..when trans was out..

Melling pump seems to be ok..
Only ran few minutes.. But no clacking at start up...trans shifts. But...the needle bearing needs more thought.. Big oil leak at converter.. Yes I can take..told you so...but ..unless it's done it's only theory.. So out comes trans..and bronze bushing in. It does give me time to check shift motor. Had shifts..so that was my problem before..no oil was getting thru..is now..ft pump works..

Thinking this.
What it needs is a seal with leather. On inside of seal to hold rubber lip. And that would work also with the bushing too..to hold back fluid..

Not sure leather is the solution. Packard had problems with leather and the heat of the fluid. Believe that is the converter in pressure that is fed thru the area which can go up to 80psi or so. I think it will need at least part of a bushing near the seal to confine the leakage to a few drops that can be handled by the drain opening.
