What is a "flat hat" and what would be the American version?
(Sorry, I don't get out much)

West, You should really get out more!. . I believe this is what Pat refers to as a "flat hat". It is commonly worn throughout much of Europe by the "working class". I refer to them as a "Donegal cap" when made of Tweed wool.

The fine example of Irish manhood pictured below would, if he knew nothing at all about vintage cars, qualify as an aforementioned 'Flat Cap'.

Listed below are essential requirements for Flat Capping;

1. Exhibit a total lack of respect for anyone or anything.
2. Be loud.
3. Possess the ability to eat disgusting food and share it when it talks.
4. Have an inability to absorb information.
5. Be steadfast in its beliefs, no matter how wrong.
6. A background in engineering, up to wheelbarrow maintaince level.
7. Strong in-dept knowledge of history, having extensively studied beer bottles labels.
8. A wardrobe containing several greasy flatcaps.
9. Have achieved absolutely nothing in their lives.
10. Be a drain on society.

That was a great article and it should have been published. I suspect the folks on this site will pass it around more than the original publication it was intended for might. Thanks for brightening up my day.

Oh My!
I just counted 5 Flat Caps in the coat closet -- all of them mine. And I am not Irish (that I know of).
Great article! At most of the car shows here in the Midwest that I go to, my Packard isn't leaned on.

I saw a funny video (on a link that I think Guscha posted here) where a guy had a pair of two-way radios. He mounted one under the grill of his Packard and took the other with him whenever he parked his car at Starbucks or a cafe. He would sit in the restaurant where he could see his car. Whenever some one got too close or touched the car, he would speak thru the other radio. "Hey there would you step back a bit, Thank you. I might start up and run over you." He would make comments about the guys shirt of something." It was a Candid Camera kind of moment.

Think I might do that at my next car show.

Here's a sample from last fall. This was at a Senior Citizen Center. EVERYONE THERE KNEW WHAT A PACKARD WAS! That was sweet.

My experiences aren't quite as bad as yours. But I did have one. I was showing my 1949 convertible in an indoor show. One that could be expected to draw enthusiasts and people who understand old cars. As I returned to my car I see a 4 t0 5 year old boy hanging from my driver's door trying to get traction with his tennis shoes on the lower portion of the door. He was doing a pretty good job of creating skid marks on my gray paint without actually gaining any height. I can still hear the squeak squeak squeak as I got close. When still at a distance, I yelled at the boy to get off of my car. Just as I got to my car, his parent intercepted me and chastised me for yelling at there son. They said "he only wants to see inside". "He aint hurtin nuthin". At that point I was so flustered I no reply.

As I said this has been the exception. I do, like many other Packard owners, get the inevitable questions, "Who made Packards?" Or, Who built engines for Packard?

Oh well, maybe educating those from the shallower end of the gene pool is just part of our responsibility of owning and showing Packards.
