I think it is time to retire it! I found a company who is manufacturing new ones.

K M Lifestyle Mfg 508 798 2445 This is Mike's cell phone number. Price for the sender is $145.00 They are an old fashioned company. Call Mike and he will look at the data books to get your exact fuel sender. Then, send a check to his company's NEW address. Ask him, the old address is on the website. I did not post the company before because I did not want to look I worked for them.

The fuel sender arrived but the flange was too large for the sender recess in the tank . Also, it was a 6 hole and mine was a 5 hole. I called Mike at KM Lifestyles Mfg. and in our discussion I remembered that my car had been hit in the left rear quarter panel at some time in it's life. He stated that the sender sent was the correct one for an OEM tank. So, it probably did not have an OEM tank. I traced the outline of the sender unit flange and sent it to them. He mentioned that there were only 2 possibilities so a match-up would not be hard. He said this was not an unusual situation. Mike is very easy to work with!
The sender he sent me was beautifully made, heavy duty with a weighted action to the float...(when float raised to the "full" tank position, and released, it slowly descended to empty). In the pics you can see how thick the flange was made.

Looks nice. Definitely 5 hole on a stock tank. Have you taken the opportunity to measure the resistance to verify it is what was reported for the old Stewart-Warner units -- 0 ohms full and 100 empty. How about using clip leads and hooking it up off the tank to make sure the gauge reads properly.
