1937 Super 8 manifold heat control valve assembly

I'm trying to help a new Packard owner. He just got a 37 Packard Super 8. The car overheated rather quickly. I quickly figured out, not only was the butterfly valve stuck but, the previous owner hit it trying to loosen it up and broke the weight off. Now he needs the whole manifold heat control valve assembly.

Unless it's a show car, I wouldn't bother with it. Just remove it altogether, or somehow keep it open all the time.

When I installed a new exhaust on my '56 Caribbean I eliminated the manifold heat riser valve and with the benefit of hindsight I wish I hadn't. Initial engine performance just after startup in the cooler spring and fall months is balky without it, so I'd vote for getting the necessary parts and making it functional. I've also driven my '34 both with and without it; with it the car is instantly driveable on cold startup, without out in the cooler seasons you really want 5 minutes of warming up before hitting the road. After all, it was there for a purpose.

Thank you for the tip. I'll try to find a replacement.

I believe either Max or Kanters (or perhaps both) have a kit with the thermostat spring and perhaps some other parts. The rest would be easy enough to make if you can't find it from them or elsewhere.
