This is on a '51 300

I took the cue from TurboPackman and got a rebuilt stock HEI unit for a 1975 Pontiac 455. I looked at a new, aftermarket unit, but there would've been a couple of added complications based on the way their casting was, and opted for the stocker. It took minimal machining. It is a pretty straightforward conversion. However, you must have 12v.

I wasn't having any problems with the stock setup, but I did a little port work when I rebuilt it (327) and used the '53 4-barrel manifold with a 500 cfm Edelbrock. I converted to solid lifters/cam from a 288. With the HEI it does start quicker.

I also converted from Ultramatic to a Bendsten's Machine kit for a 700R4. What an amazing difference. Easy conversion, but must go to 12v or a 6/12 setup because they utilize a modern gear reduction starter. Biggest change was modifying the driveshaft.

Hello, My name is Nate and I just found your post from 2007. Are you still doing the HEI conversions for the Packard straight eights? Mine is a 53 clipoer with a 327. I tried the pertronix conversion and am not happy with it. If you could please let me know, I would appreciate it. Best way to get me is email. 1olefarttoo@gmail.com.
Thanks
